For many students leaving for college, this will be their very first experience living away from Mom and Dad.
It is a rite of passage that can be and is, a wonderful experience for most kids. However, it is also a period of time fraught with possible danger.
Beware of the RED ZONE!
What is the Red Zone?
It’s the period of time when most freshman girls are most vulnerable to sexual assault on college campuses.
According to the Department of Justice, it’s the time between when a student first arrives on campus in late August and Thanksgiving break.
Most parents have never even heard of this term and of course, most universities won’t openly share this information for fear word will get out and they will lose potential applicants.
There are many reasons for red zone assaults.
For one thing, many of these girls are on their own for the first time in their lives and they don’t always have the experience to handle many of the new situations they will find themselves in.
Freshman tend to over drink, which results in poor decision making.
Freshman are often making new friends and are influenced by peer pressure.
There are lots of reasons – it is up to parents and educators like myself, to make these young women as informed as possible so they don’t end up a victim of the Red Zone.
If you would like some additional information, here’s a good article that discusses the Red Zone.
Of course, the best defense is to enroll your daughter in a good self defense seminar; or even better, enroll her in a traditional style of martial arts like karate so that she will have the confidence and the knowledge to protect herself.
