What a start to the New Year!

We had freezing temperatures and then a weather advisory for ice, sleet and snow.

Of course the weather was beautiful and we canceled class needlessly.  Thank you to everyone being supportive about the closing.  I am going to always try and err on the side of caution and we don’t have to close to bad weather often, but it occasionally does happen.

January is a great month to start thinking about revisiting our goals for the year.

For me personally, I am going to focus on eating healthier and see if I can exercise more consistently.

Okay, here’s what’s going on:

Calendar

General curriculum guide

Week 1 Basics

Week 2 Self Defense

Week 3 Forms

Week 4 Sparring/Drills/Basics

Week 5 Self Defense

Please note, I do occasionally make adjustments to the curriculum depending on what areas the students need more work on.  Students should be prepared to cover any topic each class.

Martin Luther King Holiday

SKS will be closed for the MLK Holiday on Monday, January 15th.

Advanced and adult students are encouraged to make up this class by attending one of our family style beginner or intermediate classes later in the week.

Weapons Seminar

Saturday, January 27th, 9:00 a.m. to 9:45 a.m.

I will be teaching a 45 minute class on the bo staff.

FREE to any SKS student.

The only requirement is you have a bo staff for the seminar and I am asking for at least 10 students to commit to attending.

Please register on our SKS University events page.  HERE

Click on “GOING” to signal your attendance.

I will be covering the historical use, how to handle, some basic strikes and work on the Bo 1 form.

If there is good participation, I will consider offering these kinds of workshops periodically.

Active Shooter Seminar Details

Saturday, January 27th, 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

The C.O.B.R.A. Active Shooter response plan was developed from law enforcement training and experience.

We teach men, women, children, churches, organizations, schools and corporations worldwide, how to become your very own first responder.  While this is a very serious security threat to society, we present the material in a way that is very informative, fun and engaging.

During the seminar, we will cover a 15 point strategy to beat the active shooter.

Due to the serious nature of the material being covered, participants must be 12 years of age or older.

But hurry, this workshop will be limited to just 24 participants!

Cost: $25  per person general public

Cost: $10 per person SKS students and parents

Payable on or before the the seminar.

Parents Night Out (PNO)

There is no PNO this month.  The plan is to start hosting them again starting in February.

Our next theme will be Saber wars with lightsabers included.

Report Cards

Since many of the schools are going to a digital format, I am trying to make it easier for parents to register their child’s recent success during the last semester.

I created an on-line reporting form to simplify reporting.  Parents, if you want your child to get credit, please submit your information using this document:   Report Card Submission Form

I would still be happy to review the report card with your child.  In the past, I have found this to be a very useful tool for those students that need motivation or praise for their work.

Super Star 4 Life Character Program

I have purchased an additional character education program to compliment our Black Belt Excellence character concept.  Instead of focusing on a monthly word, I am going to present concepts tied into a character theme for the quarter.

This quarter, the theme is to BE YOUR BEST!

In addition to the weekly mat chats and Facebook memes, there are some 15 missions (assignments) that are part of this program, for our students to complete.  At the end of the quarter, students who participated in this program and completed missions, will submit their form and they will be recognized with a stripe for their belt.  For those students who complete enough missions and earn 50 points or more, they will be invited to a free pizza party.

The missions are not that difficult, nor require hours of work, but tie in nicely with our character theme.  I always try to be sensitive to the time demands at home and I don’t believe these missions are very difficult.

This program is open to ALL students……not just the children.

It is NOT mandatory, but I certainly would like everyone to participate as it compliments the emphasis our karate program places on character here in the dojo, at home, school or work.

All of the material associated with this program can be found in the SKS University on Facebook.

For your convenience, here is the link to our SKS University group on Facebook where all of the files are posted:  SKS University Group Files.

Finally, social media is an important aspect of marketing my dojo and I really need the HELP of my parents to spread the word.  There are several things you can do to help:

  1. Check in every time you visit our school – it reminds many that follow you that you are here
  2. Post a picture or video of class – comment about your child and the benefit you believe they are receiving
  3. Post a review for to share your experience with others: Facebook, Google, Yelp, etc.
  4. Finally, if you know someone that is interested in the martial arts or may benefit from our program, go ahead and invite them into our SKS University Group.  I will approve them on your request.  This way they will get a glimpse at the culture of our school and the kind of community we represent.

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask!
